How eMajor’s RN-to-BSN Program Addresses Georgia’s Need for Highly-Trained Nurses

While the nursing shortage across the country became more severe after the pandemic, Georgia is faring worse than most other states. According to the Bureau of Health Workforce, Georgia will face the second largest shortage of nurses by 2035, with Washington ranking first. The shortage is typically more severe in rural counties than in metropolitan areas.

A shortage of nurses affects health care but also results in fewer nursing faculty available to teach and train the next generation. An MSN degree is required for most nurse educator jobs, and a BSN provides this pathway. Furthermore, the Institute of Medicine has pushed for 80 percent of nurses to hold bachelor’s degrees, resulting in a BSN being required at an increasing number of medical facilities.

The University System of Georgia has addressed this issue by supporting RN-to-BSN programs and courses throughout the state. This includes the RN-to-BSN program through Columbus State University. Fully online, this program enables nurses with ADN degrees or RN licenses to earn their bachelor’s degrees in nursing in just one year.

Tuition for the program is approximately $5572, and it has been recognized for being one of the most affordable in the nation. This tuition breaks down into approximately $199 per credit hour. Prerequisite courses and institutional fees may be required and can affect the total cost. Admission requires a valid nursing license and a 2.5 GPA on pre-requisite courses. According to ZipRecruiter, the average BSN-degreed nurse in Georgia earned in excess of $83,000 in October 2023, with those in specialty areas earning significantly more.
