With K-12 schools and colleges and universities transitioning to e-learning as a means to limit the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), many students may feel curious or uncertain as to what a “fully online” course means. If you’re feeling anxious about beginning your journey as a college student online, relax and breathe in and out. We’re here to help you along the way.
The first thing you need to do is commit to giving this new virtual education experience all you’ve got! Next, know that you’re already headed in the right direction by seeking out proven distance learning strategies for student success.
Thrive in your online courses by applying the following tips:
1. Understand the LMS Platform
Navigating online classes can seem a bit challenging at first, especially if you’re new to distance learning, but it doesn’t have to be if you set aside time upfront to identify the ins and outs of your new classroom.
You can start this process by checking your email for login instructions, as well as your username and password. Use those credentials to access your class through the learning management system (LMS), such as Brightspace by D2L, which is used to deliver courses online to students throughout the USG.
Once you log in, explore the LMS homepage navigation bars for initial video tutorials and support resources. Take this time to customize your student profile account. Make your experience personal by indicating if you have a preferred name you want to go by, social media platforms, contact information, and any fun hobbies you would like your instructor and classmates to know about you.
2. Familiarize Yourself with the Course
Next, you’ll want to head into the course portal and repeat the navigation process by familiarizing yourself with the course tabs, which commonly include your Syllabus, Content, Assessments, Communications, Resources, etc. Your syllabus will also include important information about the course’s technical requirements, such as having reliable Internet access.
Use this time as an opportunity to familiarize yourself with upcoming due dates for assignments, such as any mandatory attendance quizzes or discussion posts in each class. Also, don’t forget to check the Course Home page for initial announcements left by your instructor. Take note of live chat functions and embedded support buttons where you can have your questions answered and receive help. You ultimately want to walk away from this step with a firm understanding of online class expectations and ways to access available resources.
3. Get Organized
One of the most common issues students face when acclimating to college online is practicing time management and personal accountability. Unlike face-to-face sessions, it is entirely up to you to access the course, where you will complete your studies, assignments, and assessments at your convenience. Remember to set reminders to log in and check for updates a few times out of the week.
To stay ahead of the curve, create a study plan or calendar with designated study days and times at the beginning of the semester. Be realistic by setting attainable goals that you can meet that align with the course objectives and due dates. Designate study areas that promote positive learning environments where you feel comfortable working. Eliminate all distractions, such as your phone, streaming apps, social media, or even folks that might take your attention away from the task at hand. Know that you must make studying a priority as if it were a job you were reporting to, and your paycheck was on the line!
4. Be Engaged Through Active Participation
The most successful online learners tend to be the ones who are highly involved and connected to the class at large. Begin with participating in personalized interactions with your instructor and classmates through introduction discussion posts and emails. Keep in mind that your instructors want to see you succeed. Maintain those lines of open communication with your professors at all times and never hesitate to ask for help or express concerns when things arise. By practicing tips for being engaged in your classes, you are more likely to do better academically. You can also cultivate online support groups and/or in-person study groups and tight-knit relationships with your classmates that mimic cohort bonds. Take advantage of those groups to further your knowledge and expand your skills in completing course studies, assignments, and projects.
5. Practice Self-Care
Try not to become too consumed with your studies that you forget to take care of your well-being! It’s essential to take breaks regularly and find ways to relieve stress by stepping away from technology when possible to find a healthy balance between school and your personal life. Treat yourself to a nature walk, read a book, binge watch your favorite television series, or whatever else brings you joy. Incorporating self-care throughout the semester will allow you to stay motivated to finish out your online schooling strong! Prioritize each element of your wellness (i.e., physical, intellectual, emotional, social, etc.) so that you can not only tackle your assignments but live a happy life!
