Chickens and Rabbits and College - Oh My! Meet Online Student, Quteaus Smith

Quteaus Smith, 28
Gordon State College
Major: Early Childhood Education
Expected Graduation: Summer 2019

After 10 years of job instability, this mom decided to make a change and go back to school. Now, she's working toward a degree in Early Childhood Education and setting an example for her children. Read more about Quteaus, how she balances her time, and what motivated her to go back in the first place.

How did you come to be a student at Gordon State College at this particular time in your life?
I [first] attended Gordon about 10 years ago, and got off track due to basically being young and irresponsible. After working job after job over the years I decided that I wanted career stability, so I re-enrolled at Gordon.

Why is completing your college degree important to you?
[I want] a better life for myself and my family. I am a true believer that whatever is started should be finished. I want to send a message to my children that no matter how tough things get, you never give up.

Why did you choose to take online classes?
Being a mother of 3 children and working a full-time job is very demanding, especially when my husband works in Minneapolis. Taking online classes gives me the flexibility to take the courses I need at home while still managing the responsibilities of being a mom.

Besides being a college student, what do you spend your time doing?
Being a mom and taking care of my 5 chickens, 3 rabbits, and 2 dogs. I love animals!

How and when do you make time to spend on your school work?
I have a color coordinated calendar that hangs above my desk area. It reminds me when assignments are due and what assignments are due. I spend at least 3 to 4 hours a day on schoolwork or studying.

Have you used any of the additional support resources available in eCore classes?
Yes; I used Smarthinking for the first time about 2 weeks ago, and it is amazing. I was able to get the help that I needed and scored a 90 on my exam.

What would you say to someone who is considering taking their first online class?
Make sure that you are a self motivator and have discipline. Online classes are not easier than traditional classes and you have to do the work, but if it is used correctly it has great benefits.

3 Things to Consider Before Taking an Online Class While Overseas

Online Learning allows students the flexibility of continuing their educational journey from anywhere in the world. Online classes are an excellent option for students who are studying abroad for the semester, military members and families who are stationed overseas, or even those who want to take classes while traveling for pleasure. While online classes can usually be accessed from anywhere with a reliable internet connection, there are some things to consider before registering for class if you intend to complete the course while located outside of the U.S.  Availability of a Reliable Internet Connection To access most online classes, students must have a reliable internet connection. eMajor Gave Me a Second Chance: One Student’s Journey to Earning Her Bachelor’s

After taking a break from college, Saucony Hunt learned about affordable, online degrees through the University System of Georgia’s eMajor program. Hunt was 12 years into her career when she became increasingly aware that she needed to complete a bachelor’s degree to continue to advance. Hunt initially enrolled in college right after high school, but reflects that she was “not prepared or focused enough to complete a degree at that time.” While she has no regrets about joining the workforce, she began looking for educational opportunities when she approached the midpoint of her career. Now she’s enrolled at East Georgia State College completing her degree in Organizational Leadership fully online through the USG eMajor Program , This program offers a flexible route that allows students in many career paths to tailor their learning and possibly receive credit for demonstration of learning achieved during past work or military experiences. What drew Saucony to eMajor was the unparallel...
